Wal-Mart a treatment for post-traumatic stress?

Link to article: Wal-Mart a treatment for post-traumatic stress?

I saw this article title and of course it caught my eye. Big-box retailers – those megastores we all have in our communities do set up conditions in which vets with post traumatic stress can easily be triggered. But asking them to go there and stay until they’re comfortable is just another abuse of them using prolonged exposure therapies. For many with PTSD this can cause secondary injuries and make the recovery even more difficult. Thought Field Therapy allows people to go where they choose without becoming overwhelmed. Tapping when triggered will end the upset. Asking someone who is triggered to stay in that situation will only result with someone getting hurt.

The authors are doing a great service for the Veteran population by helping distribute the solid facts about the impact of this war on 300,000 plus who are or will suffer from PTSD.

The impairments to living in our world that are the hallmarks of PTSD often resulting in running outside the legal and social norms. Understanding the nature of the underlining problems is imperative if justice is to be served for the victims, the perpetrators, and our community. Justice in its simplest terms is seeing that one gets what one is due. What is due us all is real concern for our safety and loving caring support in being human as best we can. What is due the men and women we ask to go in harm’s way is every possible service and support in living among us as a nation.

Cleansing Ritual Effective in Treating Trauma Stress

Cleansing ritual effective in treating trauma stress

This is an interesting article and perspective.

Healing comes in many forms and needs to be both culturally and psychologically acceptable to be available and used. Thought Field Therapy is not cultural or language specific and has been used around the world to end the overwhelming upset of post traumatic stress. Dr. Callahan’s book has be translated into 11 different languages. This non-invasive, non-drug, non-cognitive, and safe technique that works in minutes.

Army sergeant was accused of ‘exaggerating’ the stress of war

Army sergeant was accused of ‘exaggerating’ the stress of war

This is a feel good story in so many ways.

It feels good to know that this man will be treated fairly now.

It feels good to hear his therapy knew he had PTSD.

It feels good to know that money will not be tolerated as a factor in medical diagnosis.

The only this that does not feel good is knowing the suffering that comes with living with PTSD or living with a loved one with PTSD. This man and his family have suffered enough. Often when cognitive or behavioral approaches have not resolved the symptoms of traumatic stress Thought Field Therapy will help.

Thought Field Therapy is a nondrug, noninvasive, noncognitive, and safe technique that eliminates overwhelming distress in moments. Because it is a noncognitive technique and goes directly to the source of the fear and anxiety experienced in person is especially useful when working with individuals with cognitive or other limitations.

Thought Field Therapy as a self-help tool is available free on the Internet.

A Marathon for my Birthday

Bob running the CarlsBad Marathon

Running the CarlsBad Marathon

Working in the Traumatic Stress recovery field for so many years has taught me that sometimes that which seems impossible does happen. In this line I want to share with you my amazement and joy in having completed the CarlsBad Marathon last month.

Last year when my wife asked what I wanted for my 60th birthday, I told her I wanted a Marathon. Her support, patience, and encouragement to keep on a training program got me to the start line 6 days after my birthday. This was an amazing feat in itself as there were many ups and downs along the way. I had to commit to a level of discipline I have not experienced in years. There were some hard choices about how I used my time. I had injuries along the way (some were mistakes in judging my capacity and some were accidents). With the support of my friends I finished the 26.2 miles appropriately exhausted with a sense of accomplishment and delight. Being healthy enough and having a life that allowed me to do this experiment in ‘what is possible’ brings me a wonderful feeling I will enjoy for the rest of my life.

As with everything I do there was a lot of tapping involved – tapping for pain, anxiety, trauma, fear, embarrassment and every other emotion. The physical and psychological challenges in running a 60 year old body any distance is made easier with Though Field Therapy.

I wish all of you have a very happy next birthday.

How Child Abuse Primes the Brain for Future Mental Illness

This is very good article (click here to read the full article) explaining how cell damage occurs under high stress and has an impact throughout one’s life in managing stress in general. More importantly it begins to help us understand why some are susceptible to traumatic stress. Knowing that there is physical damage to the cells of the brain and the functioning of the systems these parts of the brain control I hope will relieve those who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress responses from the guilt and shame that stops them from reaching out for help. I hope this information will also help those who do not have posttraumatic stress problems in being more compassionate and accepting of their condition. Regardless of the origins of the traumatic stress responses overwhelming an individual Thought Field Therapy (TFT) will immediately eliminate the overwhelming emotional stress one experiences when triggered. The nature of the triggers and the frequency of the overwhelming response may indeed be directly related to the abuse suffered as a child and subsequent damage to brain cells. This just means some have to use more Thought Field Therapy than others.

PTSD and Medical Cannabis

PTSD and Medical Cannabis

As a professional who helps those with PTSD I have worked with many clients who have used anti-depressants and marijuana. Their reports to me and the change they have made support the arguments made in this article and I support the change in the law. Making more vets and survivors of traumatic stressor events criminals will do no good for them or society.

But…

chemical interventions of any kind are only a tiny bit better than placebo. Thought Field Therapy is much more effective – working in the moment to eliminate the overwhelming upset that make so many with PTSD suffer everyday.

Tip #6 – Feelings can always be shared

You can view a video of this tip on the Videos page here.

Many of those who experience traumatic stress do so in the line of duty. They may be military, law enforcement, or other roles that require that they keep secrets. So, the details of the events that have injured them are the source of the traumatic stress and must remain unknown to those outside the operation or agency for legal or security purposes.

Don’t get caught up in all of these issues because we don’t need to know any of the details of the where and who and what to help our loved ones heal from traumatic stress. All of that operational debriefing process is happening within their professional setting. The ‘who did what when’ is being discussed in great depth. What may not be happening and is often more difficult is the discussion of the emotional aspects of the mission. Your loved ones can share their thoughts and feelings that they experienced during those moments of terror, hopelessness, helplessness, or violence without divulging any secrets. Anyone who has been given a security clearance or signed a confidentiality form knows what they can disclose and what they cannot safely disclose. None of that will stop them from sharing their feelings that they had in those moments that haunt them since it happened. I have worked with many people and know that my knowing the details of the mission is not necessary in helping them with their PTSD recovery.

Start by acknowledging your understanding of the limitations imposed on them and assure them you will not press for any specific details about the mission or action and that you are interested only in their emotional experience and reactions. For example a service member was leading a drug interdiction action that resulted in his being traumatically stressed by the harm that happen to his men. Without knowing the location, time, or any other details his wife could understand and support him in his recovery by reminding him to tap or to simply express his feelings and insights. Being able to say the feelings out loud acknowledges the impact of the event even without saying anything that may disclose secrets.

This not pressing for details about the event also has the advantage of protecting the outsiders (outsider is anyone not in their profession or operational unit) from being vicariously traumatized by the description of violence, pain, or blood and gore that their loved ones were exposed to. Someone with post-traumatic stress knows the power of such details and will protect those they love by refusing to share any feelings for fear of revealing harmful details.

Not sharing the details also helps those who are worried that if all was told, those they love will reject them because of the actions they took to survive. Be patient and once the wounds close it is much more possible to take risks in relationships.

Reassuring your loved ones the details don’t matter allows them to get to what does matter which is healing the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wounds.

Remember you are not alone and there is much you can do to be better. Keep tapping and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Film Reveals “The Invisible War” on Women in Our Military

Film Reveals “The Invisible War” on Women in Our Military

As a licensed clinical social worker and a certified traumatic stress specialist I have worked with women who were assaulted in the military and I look forward to seeing this film and being able to share it with my clients.

So often women feel terribly alone as they fight for justice on the road to recovering from this traumatic stress. While we work to change the culture and to assure that women are valued as highly as men in our military, we must do all we can to see that those who were attacked and continue to be the traumatized by the military justice system are supported and helped and healed.

The best technique to alleviate the overwhelming emotional upset of traumatic stress is thought field therapy. Its most basic forms are available free on the Internet. It is a nondrug, non-invasive, noncognitive, and safe way to end the pain of being caught in the there and then of those terrible events and move to the here and now that is safe and connected positively to other people.

Thank you to all who have the courage to be the in this film and to those who gave their time and energy to make this film.

Eye Movements and Trauma Therapy

Eye Movements and Trauma Therapy Article

As a licensed clinical social worker and a certified traumatic stress specialist I have known of EMDR since the early 1990s. I do believe it to be an effective and useful tool in the treatment of traumatic stress. I stopped using EMDR when I learned Thought Field Therapy in the late 1990s. Thought field therapy can be taught as a self-help technique to be given to anyone suffering with the symptoms of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome). Professionals of all types, not just mental health at the Masters and PhD level, can learn and use more advance techniques to help in difficult cases. Thought Field Therapy is safe. It is a non-drug, noninvasive, non-cognitive, and fast acting technique that has been used hundreds of thousands of times around the world. Dr. Callahan’s books have been translated into nine different languages. There is a body of research verifying its effectiveness in a variety of settings. The most basic forms can be found free online, including here on this site.

If you have PTSD or know someone who does the most important thing is to not give up. You’re not alone and there is much to be done to help you. Check out my Tips to Help Someone You Love videos.
